A Very Good Slideshow on Email Etiquette

Speed up Visual Studio 2005

Make sure Visual Studio 2005 SP1 is installed.

  1. Turn off animation. Go to Tools | Options | Environment and uncheck Animate environment tools.
  2. Disable Navigation Bar. If you are using ReSharper, you don't need VS2005 to update the list of methods and fields at the top of the file (CTRL-F12 does this nicely). Go to Tools | Options | Text Editor | C# and uncheck Navigation bar.
  3. Turn off Track Changes. Go to Tools | Options | Text Editor and uncheck Track changes. This will reduce overhead and speeds up IDE response.
  4. Turn off Track Active item. This will turn off jumping in the explorer whenever you select different files in different projects. Go to Tools | Options | Projects and Solutions and uncheck Track Active Item in Solution Explorer. This will ensure that if you are moving across files in different projects, left pane will still be steady instead of jumping around.
  5. Turn off AutoToolboxPopulate. There is an option in VS 2005 that will cause VS to automatically populate the toolbox with any controls you compile as part of your solution. This is a useful feature when developing controls since it updates them when you build, but it can cause VS to end up taking a long time in some circumstances. To disable this option, select the Tools | Options | Windows Forms Designer and then set AutoToolboxPopulate to False.

Photoshop: PSD 75% lighter

Photoshop seems to me like a marvelous software, in my opinion isby far the best out there… is the most powerful, versatile, the greatest. But it still has a problem since previous versions, the weight of the files is huge, we could think that for the information it has the size is reasonable but…

Did you know that we can reduce the weight of the PSD up to 75%?

This is something to think about, if we can reduce so much the information in a PSD it would be because this format is not very optimized, right?. Most people think that’s why there are files with compression, TIFF or JPG… but they agree that keeping the original files in PSD format is much more comfortable than working with TIFF (i don’t think we need to compare it with JPG).

Well, how can we do this? Something as simple as hiding the layers before saving the file, if after that you compress it with Winrar or Winzip you will save a lot more.

Capas ocultasCapas ocultas

Here you have the information of the experiment:

  1. Normal PSD: 49,2 MB
  2. PSD saved with the hidden layers: 38,9 MB
  3. PSD saved with the hidden layers and zipped: 11,5 MB

The new version of Photoshop CS3 is out and we still have the same problem… we will have to wait a little more. Now, if you have to send a PSD via FTP or email… you have no choice than doing this.

CCleaner

There are few must install software for any Desktop - notebook Windows installation and one of which is this free software called CCleaner.

What is CCleaner ?

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware !

This is what the official web site says, how ever to make it simple, when you run Windows and other application, such as photo shop / word / video editing software / Internet browser and any other, every time they run, they create large amount of temporary files in your system.

As you access each software and use them those also creates large number of registry entry and system short cuts (such as recently used documents). When you stop using those application you are not in need of those entries any more but they are left in your system for future references.

This is where CCleaner comes in. It scans and cleans all these junk to free up HDD space and registry entry to fasten up the system performance.

How do you use CCleaner ?

There is a common theory among many of us, about any system configuration applications that they are hard to use as well as they screw up the system.

However this is what I like about this software. The best part is, its really easy to use, as simple as few steps.

Step 1 - Obtain & install the application

Visit CCleaner.com to download this 3 MB file and start the installation, when prompt remove all entries accept Start Menu short cuts and Automatically check for CCleaner updates.

Installation Configuration

Step 2 - Start and Clean your system

Yes, it is that simple. No other configuration is needed, simply start the application and hit Analyze button.

CCleaner

Notice how much junk is detected and how much can be removed, and hit the Run CCleaner button to execute the cleaning process.

Few Facts which I Like

  • Free Software with no ads or any such.
  • Simple 3 MB Download.
  • Preconfigured - as an user you just need to run it.
  • Compatible with Windows XP (x86 / x64) Windows Vista (x86 / x64).
  • Maintenance free.

Microsoft office compatibility Pack is one of the Must install if you are running Microsoft Office Pririor to MS Office 2007.

The Office 2007 application such as Word, Excle, PowerPoint, will no more than use the Older File Extention like .doc for Word, in fact the new Word 2007 uses .docx as its Default format…

So even if you dont have any thing to do with MS Office 2007 but your clients of contacts may use the new office now when they save a file ex. in Word 2007, they will find file saved as Default format .docx, so when you receive such file this free update will allow your older Office setup, like Office 2000, Office XP and 2003 to access those files and open them for you…

Download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.

This is a Very good Tips for MSOffice 2007 users, Taken from chotocheeta.com

When you save a document under Microsoft Office by default MS Office 2007 applications uses a new file format to save the file, for example

Microsoft Word 2007 will use new file format .docx
Microsoft Excel 2007 will use new file format .xlsx
Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 will use new File format .pptx

Now when under any of these application you click Save As they will offer option to save as Older MS Office Compatible file formats,

or you can force word to save in that format by default instead of new format, By Visiting Word Options,

Then go to Save TAB (Located at the Left Navigation Panel, and under that  Change the option Save file in this format to Word 97-2003 Document (.doc)

Thats it, it will force Word 2007 to save as .doc in default Save command !!!

Process is same under PowerPoint and Office Excel 2007…

Question may come why would you need it, the main reason is the Older Version of  MS Office by default is not compatible with the new format, so if you send any file saved under new format will not going get open in older MS Office system. Without the Help of Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack but thats not under your control to make sure that recipient of your Document has installed that under his or her system…

Core 2 Duo Logo Intel Pentium D Logo Intel Pentium Dual Core

Many people are confused what exactly the difference between Intel Core 2 Duo and Between Intel Pentium D or Intel Dual Core processors….

I would try to explain from a END user point a view rather not going in to details architecture over view…

The Simple facts are,

All Core 2 Duo Processors are Dual Core Processors..
All Pentium D Processors are Dual Core Processors..
All Intel Dual Core Processors are Dual Core Processors…

Pentium D is nothing but 2 Prescott Processors side by side… runs very hot, not a good OverClocker…

Intel Core 2 Duo processors are next gen processors from Intel on 65 nm platform… developed from Ground up with new Architecture called Core… so they are whole new Processors just Jump like Pentium 2 to Pentium 3 or Pentium 4… Expect one Core 2 Duo Lowest End Processors like E4400/E4300 taking up and beating Intel Pentium D 3.8 GHz ones with ease … runs damn cool and super over clocker…

Intel Dual Core Processors are just launched striped down version of Core 2 Duos.. there are 2 in Market for Desktop range, E2140 runs at 1.6 GHz with 1 MB L2 and 800 MHz FSB and E2160 with 1.8 GHz with same specs of E2140…. these are not Pentium D rather they are same batch like Core 2 Duo based on the new Core Technology…. they perform same like Core 2 Duos but they were launched with a very low price to counter the market of super low cost but high performer AMD X2 range line up to AMD X2 4000….

Increase Your Internet Speed by 20%

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like
Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc.

Click Start then Run and type

“gpedit.msc” without quotes.

This opens the Group Policy Editor.

Then go to: Local Computer Policy –> Computer Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Network –> QOS Packet Scheduler

Then double click LimitReservableBandwidth.

It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the ‘Explain’ tab i.e.”By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default.”

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

Increase Windows XP Shutdown Speed

Windows XP stores a couple of values in its registry which are responsible for determining how long to wait before shutting down (killing) open applications and services once the shutdown command has been given.

By editing these two settings and changing them to lower values, you can considerably decrease the amount of time that Windows XP needs to successfully shut itself down. The first part of this tweak deals with setting the amount of time Windows will take to kill open applications on shutdown.

Open REGEDIT and navigate to ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\’
Highlight the ‘WaitToKillAppTimeout’ value.
Set it to ‘1000′ (the default should be 20000).
Now highlight the ‘HungAppTimeout’ value
Set it to ‘1000′ also.

Quick Reminder About File Paths

Whenever I have a problem with an image “not showing up” on a web page, the first thing I do is take a close look at the file path that references that image. If that file path is relative (meaning that it doesn’t start with http://), I pay extra close attention to the relationship of where the file is that is referencing the image, and where that image actually is.

  • Is the image in the same directory as the file referencing it?
  • Is the image in a directory below?
  • Is the image in a directory above?

By “below” and “above”, I mean subdirectories and parent directories. Relative file paths give us a way to travel in both directions. Take a look at my privative example:

file-path-example1.jpg

Here is all you need to know about relative file paths:

  • Starting with “/” returns to the root directory and starts there
  • Starting with “../” moves one directory backwards and starts there
  • Starting with “../../” moves two directories backwards and starts there (and so on…)
  • To move forward, just start with the first subdirectory and keep moving forward

Set your Gtalk Status as Idle Whenever you want

I’m a great fan of Google Talk for its simplicity. Nearly all my friends use Google Talk, and it always open stays in my systray. But one thing I don’t like about GTalk is that it doesn’t let me set my status message as idle. In many situations, you want to be online, but away as well, so providing an option to set our status as idle would have been incredibly useful.

 gtalk_idle

Fortunately, there is a freeware by the name of gAlwaysIdle which enables you to set your status message as idle. Once you install the application, it adds some extra settings to the right-click menu of GTalk icon in systray. You can choose ""Normal Idle", which lets GTalk decide when to set you as idle or "Always Idle", which permanently sets your status as idle or "Never Idle", which will prevent you from appearing as idle.

Adobe has posted a very detailed and thorough document explaining how to fine tune your PC for Photoshop CS3. Bottom line is (as always): get a fast processor, a ton of RAM, and a RAID 0 array for your scratch disk. Even if you have that, there are quite a few things you can do to optimize your workstation... Cache level preferences, memory allocation percentage, etc., etc. Well worth a read if you spend any significant amount of time in PS.

Tips 4 using Public PC

Are public computers at libraries, Internet cafes, airports, and copy shops safe?
That depends on how you use them! Take these tips to help keep your personal or financial information private.
Step 1
Don't save your logon information. Always log out of Web sites by clicking "log out" on the site. It's not enough to simply close the browser window or type in another address.
Many programs (especially instant messenger programs) include automatic login features that will save your user name and password. Disable this option so no one can log in as you.
Step 2
Don't leave the computer unattended with sensitive information on the screen. If you have to leave the public computer, log out of all programs and close all windows that might display sensitive information.
Step 3
Erase your tracks. Web browsers such as Internet Explorer keep a record of your passwords and every page you visit, even after you’ve closed them and logged out.
To disable the feature that stores passwords
Before you go to the Web, turn off the Internet Explorer feature that "remembers" your passwords.
1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
2. Click the Content tab, and then click AutoComplete.
3. Click to clear both check boxes having to do with passwords.
To delete your temporary Internet files and your history
When you finish your use of a public computer, you should delete all the temporary files and your Internet history.
1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
2. On the General tab, under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files, and then click Delete Cookies.
3. Under History, click Clear History.
To delete other files saved by corporate portals, such as Sharepoint Portal Server
If you're using a corporate Web site that allows you to view internal corporate documents, you may be inadvertently storing sensitive documents on the public computer.
1. Delete all the files in the temporary folder of your user account which you can find by browsing to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp.
2. If your company uses Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server, empty the temporary folder (My Documents\SharePoint Drafts).
Step 4
Watch for over-the-shoulder snoops. When you use a public computer, be on the look out for thieves who look over your shoulder or watch as you enter sensitive passwords to collect your information.
Step 5
Don't enter sensitive information into a public computer. These measures provide some protection against casual hackers who use a public computer after you have.
But keep in mind that an industrious thief might have installed sophisticated software on the public computer that records every keystroke and then e-mails that information back to the thief.
Then it doesn't matter if you haven't saved your information or if you've erased your tracks. They still have access to this information.
If you really want to be safe, avoid typing your credit card number or any other financial or otherwise sensitive information into any public computer.

Replacing COMDLG32.OCX

SOLUTION:

In order to fix this problem, you'll need to set up and register the library file.

The easiest way to do that is to download the following file that will install and register most of the Library Files used by Ascentive's products (if you still see the error, try the manual instructions below).

Please use the following URL to download a 5.66 MB (5,935,720 bytes) Ascentive Library Installer.

http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/libraryfiles.exe
Right click on the above link and select "Save target as..."

Alternatively, you may download just the file you are missing and manually register it yourself. Here's how to do it:
  1. Download COMDLG32.OCX (right click the text on the left and save to your Desktop).

  2. Back up your current copy of COMDLG32.OCX and copy the new version to the same file location. This file should be located in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory on your C: drive (for Windows NT and 2000: \WINNT\system32).

  3. Using your mouse, click on the "Start" button and then click on "Run".

  4. According to your Operating System, type the following command to register this library file:

    Windows 95, 98, or Me:
    regsvr32 \windows\system\COMDLG32.OCX

    Windows NT or 2000:
    regsvr32 \WINNT\system32\COMDLG32.OCX

    Windows XP:
    regsvr32 \windows\system32\COMDLG32.OCX

  5. You should see a message saying "DllRegisterServer ... succeeded"
If you are getting an error telling you that the file is missing, then you are not typing the command in correctly. You will need to type it in *exactly* as as shown above for your operating system.

* Please note that there is a SPACE after "regsvr32" and before the rest of the command.

You should probably copy and paste the command so that you are unable to mistype it.

Download COMDLG32.OCX now (right-click on the link and select "Save Target as...").
